The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards were established in 1923 to provide a structure for American communities to encourage out-of-the-box thinkers and creators. Receiving an Award means that someone outside of your direct sphere of influence-an established artist or writer-wanted to say, "You have a remarkable voice or vision. You should take your work seriously.” The juror could be an art professor or a famous artist, a local poet or the poet laureate of the United States. Regardless, the intent of The Awards is to provide aspiring young artist writers with that first blast of unadulterated recognition to help fortify them for the challenging years ahead.
